We are sharing some local events to help you celebrate this lucky holiday including parades, Irish restaurants, and local events! Plus, learn a little history to share while celebrating at the local pub!
Did you know? St. Patrick's day was originally celebrated in 1631 with a church feast celebrating St. Patrick. But who was he?
According to historians, St. Patrick was a roman citizen, enslaved and taken to Ireland. It is unclear whether he eventually escaped or was released. But, he later became a priest who went back to Ireland and converted Druids to Christians. This is where his supposed "luck" came into play.
It wasn't until the 18th century that this infamous holiday began to shape into a party scene, thanks to the holiday falling right during lent, giving Christians a day off from their abstinence.
A few fun facts to share:
- 1762 was the first parade in New York.
- The original color associated with the day was actually blue!
- The green beer didn't happen until the late 20th century when Ireland repealed a law that kept pubs closed down for the day. With a little marketing help from Budweiser in the 1980's, downing beer then became an infamous way to celebrate!
